ARTIST STATEMENT

HISTORICALLY THE PURPOSE OF A STILL LIFE PAINTING IS TO IMPOSE SPATIAL COMPOSITIONAL ORDER AMONG MULTIPLE OBJECTS, WITH LITTLE TO NO REGARD FOR THE BACKGROUND OR SURFACE THEY SIT ON.TO ME STILL LIFE IS SOMETHING VERY DIFFERENT.

MY PAINTINGS FOCUS ON A NARRATIVE BETWEEN OBJECT AND GROUND, A RELATIONSHIP THAT MOST ARTISTS SELDOM CONSIDER. DIALOGUES ARE CREATED BETWEEN OBJECTS THAT HAVE SEEMINGLY LITTLE IF ANYTHING TO DO WITH THE BACKGROUND THEY SIT ON OR HOVER OVER. OBJECTS AND PATTERNED BACKGROUNDS THAT REPERSENT PARTICULAR HISTORICAL ERAS CREATE SETTINGS OF DIVERGENT CULTURES TO DEPICT POWER, CONFLICT OR A WHIM.

THE IMAGE PRESENTED IS A CLOSE-CROPPED AERIAL VIEW THAT BECOMES INTIMATE. MY WORK EXPLORES THE "EMPTINESS" OF VESSELS THAT COMES ALIVE THROUGH REFLECTIONS, GLOW AND DEPTH. I SEEK THE OPPIRTUNITY TO LOSE THE MARGINS WITHOUT LOSING THE OBJECTS OR THE CULTURAL IMPLICATIONS OF THOSE OBJECTS.

WHETHER TOUCHING ON ISSUES OF RACE, ENVIRONMENT, CULTURAL IDENTITY OR OTHER CONTEMPORARY CONCERNS, MY WORK ASKS RATHER THAN ANSWERS QUESTIONS.
